Choose a nozzle that suits the target area, spraying system, required spray quality and operating range. Nozzle size alone is not enough. Pressure, travel speed, nozzle spacing and, where fitted, the PWM duty cycle all affect the result.

HOW TO CHOOSE A NOZZLE FOR SPOT SPRAYING

  1. Select Spot Spray

Use the Spot Spray calculator when treating individual weeds, spots, bands or directed targets.

Spot Spray and Field Spray use different treated-area assumptions. Do not transfer a nozzle recommendation or application-rate setting between these calculators without checking what the displayed rate represents.

  1. Choose the spray pattern

ARAG Tapered Fan

Choose ARAG Tapered Fan when you want to evaluate the concentrated central band produced by a supported tapered nozzle.

A tapered fan does not distribute its flow evenly across its full spray width. The calculator displays:

Spray width: The full width covered beneath the nozzle.

Target zone: The central band used for the target-zone calculation.

Target Zone Efficiency, or TZE: The proportion of the nozzle’s total flow delivered into the target zone.

Target Zone Rate: The application rate within the central target band.

Use the Target Zone Rate when assessing delivery to the intended target. The target-zone information is specific to the tested nozzle models and sizes and should not be assumed to apply to every tapered nozzle.

Generic Even Fan

Choose Generic Even Fan when you want to model an even distribution across the sprayed width.

Check the spray angle and spray width against the actual nozzle and installation. If you manually enter the spray width, use a value that represents the real setup. Do not select a width simply because it produces the desired application rate.

For an even fan, the Spray Width Rate represents the average application rate across the width sprayed by one nozzle.

Choosing between the patterns

Choose ARAG Tapered Fan to evaluate concentrated delivery into a central target band.

Choose Generic Even Fan to model even delivery across a defined spray width.

Use the comparison function when comparing both configurations over the same target area.

The percentage shown as more or less compares the tapered target-zone rate with the Even Fan result. It is a calculated delivery comparison, not a guaranteed improvement in weed control or chemical saving.

  1. Select the control system

Non-PWM systems

Leave PWM and PWFM switched off when using a non-pulsing system.

Enter the actual operating conditions and check the resulting application rate for the selected nozzle.

If using the rearward-tilt option, enter the intended installation angle and review the changed spray geometry. Rearward tilt is available as a non-PWM option in the calculator.

PWM and PWFM systems

Switch PWM and PWFM on and select the preset that matches the actual equipment.

Available presets may include:

20 Hz PWM

30 Hz PWM

50 Hz or higher PWFM with Agrifac or Weed-It selection

SWARM BOT PWFM

Preset names and settings may be configurable. Selecting a preset can change the speed, nozzle height and spacing, so recheck these values after making your selection.

Always select the system you actually operate. Frequency and system-specific duty-cycle limits affect which nozzles are suitable.

  1. Enter the operating conditions

Enter the following information:

Target application rate

Travel speed

Nozzle height

Nozzle spacing

Spray angle or spray width, where applicable

Target Zone Efficiency, where applicable

Nozzle height affects spray width and the relationship between adjacent spray fans.

Nozzle spacing affects the overlapping or controller rate and crossover geometry.

Check the Fan Crossover Height when it is displayed. This is the height at which adjacent spray patterns meet. Targets extending above the crossover height may pass through gaps between the fans.

  1. Compare nozzle sizes

Use the Smaller and Bigger controls to compare neighbouring nozzle sizes.

For each nozzle, check:

The actual target-zone or spray-width application rate

The target-zone width and total spray width

The PWM duty cycle, when enabled

Coverage geometry at the selected height and spacing

The suitability of the physical nozzle for the chemical and target

A nozzle that produces the required rate at one travel speed may not remain suitable across the complete operating range.

  1. Understand the overlapping rate

The Overlapping Rate is a separate boom-spacing calculation. It is not the same as the tapered Target Zone Rate.

For the basic metric calculation:

Application rate in litres per hectare = 600 x nozzle flow in litres per minute divided by travel speed in kilometres per hour x nozzle spacing in metres.

Controller conventions can differ. Follow the calculator’s system-specific instructions for ARAG Flowtron and Rometron Weed-It. Do not assume every displayed application rate is interchangeable.

  1. Complete the final checks

Before selecting a nozzle, confirm that:

The displayed application rate refers to the area you intend to treat.

The nozzle covers the required rate and travel-speed range.

The spray quality complies with the chemical label at the selected pressure.

The spray angle, height, width and mounting orientation suit the installation.

The frequency, compatibility and duty-cycle limits match the spraying system.

Measured nozzle output and field calibration agree with the intended setup.

The best nozzle is the one that satisfies all operating requirements, not simply the closest available size or colour.

#Always follow the chemical label and nozzle manufacturer’s instructions. The calculator helps you compare nozzle options, but it cannot guarantee coverage, chemical performance or freedom from spray drift.
