Choose a nozzle that suits the target area, spraying system, required spray quality and operating range. Nozzle size alone is not enough. Pressure, travel speed, nozzle spacing and, where fitted, the PWM duty cycle all affect the result.
HOW TO CHOOSE A NOZZLE FOR FIELD SPRAYING
Choose a nozzle that suits the required application rate, spraying system, spray quality and operating range.
Nozzle size alone is not enough. Pressure, travel speed, nozzle spacing and, where fitted, the PWM duty cycle all affect the result.
Choose the correct Field Spray option
Use Cover Spray for continuous coverage across a conventional boom.
Use the appropriate Field Spray special option for dual-nozzle, alternating, tiered, streaming, variable-rate or swather configurations.
Use Side Safety and Overlapping for the dedicated narrow-angle nozzle configuration.
Spot Spray and Field Spray use different treated-area assumptions. Do not transfer a nozzle recommendation or application-rate setting between the calculators without confirming what the displayed rate represents.
Set up a conventional Cover Spray application
Enter the following information:
Required application rate
Actual nozzle spacing
Travel speed
Operating pressure
You must then make two separate decisions.
Select a nozzle size that provides the required flow.
Select a nozzle type that provides the required spray pattern and spray quality.
The Select Nozzle Type by Spray Quality menu displays the nozzle types available for the selected size and configuration. It is not a list of every available nozzle size.
Use the Smaller and Bigger controls to change the nozzle size. These controls lock the selected size. Use the lock or unlock control to return to automatic size selection.
Choose the nozzle type
Fan
A Fan nozzle produces a single-fan pattern. Compare the available nozzle families and the spray quality displayed at the chosen operating pressure.
Twin Fan
A Twin Fan nozzle produces two spray directions. Consider the target structure, installation and the manufacturer’s height and speed recommendations.
The ARAG twin-fan option described in the calculator uses fans angled 15 degrees forwards and 15 degrees rearwards. Do not assume its installation requirements are identical to those of every other twin-fan nozzle.
Ceramic Fan
Ceramic options include AFC and LDC nozzles.
AFC is an air-induction ceramic nozzle.
LDC is a low-drift ceramic nozzle.
Consider wear resistance as well as spray quality and flow.
Always use the spray quality displayed at the selected pressure. A nozzle family name does not guarantee the same droplet classification at every pressure or nozzle size.
Check standard CFLD-C availability
For standard non-PWM Field Spray applications:
CFLD-C100 is available at 25, 38 and 50 centimetre nozzle spacing.
CFLD-C80 is available at 25 and 38 centimetre spacing.
CFLD-C80 is not available at 50 centimetre spacing.
Other operating modes have their own nozzle-availability rules.
Check the pressure and operating range
Non-PWM systems
Pressure affects nozzle flow and may change the spray quality.
Select a nozzle that provides the required application rate within its permitted pressure range. Confirm the displayed rate and spray quality before making the final selection.
PWM and PWFM systems
Switch PWM and PWFM on and select the preset that matches the actual equipment.
Check:
PWM-compatible nozzle availability
Duty cycle at the selected pressure
Displayed maximum travel speed
Minimum and maximum duty-cycle limits
At a fixed pressure, a larger nozzle generally requires a lower duty cycle to produce the same application rate. A smaller nozzle generally requires a higher duty cycle.
Choose a nozzle size that accommodates the complete intended operating range, not just one convenient test point.
Use Dual and Alternating options when required
ExactApply A+B
Select ExactApply A+B for the supported ExactApply A+B configuration.
Choose nozzle A and nozzle B and review any available LDC M option.
This configuration uses two 15 Hz solenoids operating alternately to produce a virtual 30 Hz combined pulse sequence. The frequency is locked in this mode.
Assess the pair as one system. Check the combined application rate, duty-cycle results and the suitability of each nozzle.
Alternating 25 centimetres
Select this option for the supported physical 25 centimetre alternating arrangement.
For non-PWM operation, the calculator provides CFA-U, CFA and CFA-T nozzle combinations for positions A and B.
Select a pair that provides the required flow and spray quality.
This configuration is not the same as a conventional single-nozzle boom operating at 50 centimetre spacing. Use the intended alternating arrangement and its calculated results.
Use 3TS or Section Select when required
Goldacres 3TS
Select 3TS for supported CFA110 air-induction nozzle pairs.
Choose the required pair and check the maximum application rate with both nozzles operating. This is the main capacity check because the controller manages the transition between tiers.
PWM is not available in 3TS mode.
Section Select
Select Section Select for supported CFLD80 nozzle pairs.
Check the pair’s output within the following operating limits:
Maximum travel speed: 25 kilometres per hour
Maximum pressure: 4 bar
Do not apply the Goldacres 3TS nozzle-family assumptions to Section Select.
Use Flexi or UAN Streaming for liquid fertiliser
Select Flexi or UAN Streaming when applying liquid fertiliser with supported ARAG five-hole PSP nozzles.
Enter:
Required application rate
Travel speed
Nozzle spacing
Concentration adjustment
Review the required operating pressure and the calculator’s pressure-drop guidance.
PSP nozzles produce solid streams, so a conventional spray-quality classification is not displayed.
Confirm that streaming is suitable for the fertiliser, crop and application timing.
Use ARAG Multi Rate for variable-rate applications
Select ARAG Multi Rate when one nozzle must cover a range of application rates.
Enter:
25 or 50 centimetre nozzle spacing
Operating pressure of 2.5, 3, 3.5 or 4 bar
Lowest and highest application rates
A constant speed or the lowest and highest travel speeds
The calculator compares CFLD-C100 sizes 02, 025, 03, 04, 05, 06, 08 and 010 across 10, 20 and 30 Hz PWM.
Choose a nozzle that covers the entire required operating range.
A constant or nearly constant travel speed allows the widest variable-rate range. If no nozzle is suitable, reconsider the requested application-rate or travel-speed range. Do not assume an unavailable combination will work.
Calculate centre and wing sections for swathers
Select Swathers when the centre and wing sections require separate nozzle calculations.
Enter the operating pressure, travel speed, nozzle count and spacing for each section.
Available centre-section nozzles are:
DEF01
CFLD-C10001
CFLD-C100015
CFLD-C10002
LDC11001
Available wing-section nozzles are:
CFLD-C10001
CFLD-C100015
CFLD-C10002
Compare the Centre Application Rate and Wing Application Rate separately.
The same nozzle may produce different application rates when the centre and wing sections use different spacing.
DEF01 deflector nozzles must be installed horizontally.
Set up Side Safety and Overlapping
Side Safety and Overlapping is a separate configuration with dedicated nozzle and pressure limits.
At 25 centimetre spacing, select either 40-degree CFLD-XC or 80-degree CFLD-C.
At 38 or 50 centimetre spacing, use the CFLD-C80 configuration.
The permitted operating-pressure range is 2.5 to 4 bar.
When using PWM, select an available compatible preset and check the resulting duty cycle.
Narrow-angle nozzles can help manage spray edges when installed correctly, but they do not eliminate spray drift. Check coverage, overlap and spray quality.
Complete the final checks
Before selecting a nozzle, confirm that:
The correct conventional or special configuration has been selected.
The displayed application rate refers to the area being treated.
The nozzle or nozzle pair covers the required rate and travel-speed range.
The spray quality complies with the chemical label at the selected pressure.
The nozzle angle, height, spacing and mounting orientation suit the installation.
The frequency, compatibility and duty-cycle limits match the spraying system.
Measured nozzle output and field calibration agree with the intended setup.
The best nozzle is the one that satisfies all operating requirements, not simply the closest available size or colour.
#Always follow the chemical label and nozzle manufacturer’s instructions. The calculator helps you compare nozzle options, but it cannot guarantee coverage, chemical performance or freedom from spray drift.
